Sometimes theres nothing more relaxing on holiday then sitting back and sipping on a nice cool cocktail, as you watch the bustling city life pass you by. This past-time is even more enjoyable in the laid-back South African capital of Cape Town and whether you want to flash the cash or enjoy a secret sun-downer theres a bar suitable for you.
Cocktails and Cash
If youve got cash to flash then Cape Towns most expensive cocktail can be found in M Bar. The funky bar is attached to the Metropole Hotel and coloured in a deep poppy red, with red ostrich leather chairs and a Versace fabric-covered sofa. If enjoying cocktails on a Versace sofa isnt flashy enough for you then youll probably want to order the Bling cocktail, which at R3500 is roughly equal to 315.00. The drink is a mixture of vodka, triple sec and lychee juice, served with a diamond necklace balanced precariously on the edge of the martini glass. The M Bar has only sold three to date and these have all been by patrons eager to impress their dates.
Cocktails and Cold
It isnt just cold climates like Sweden and Iceland that have need for ice bars, warmer countries like Cape Town and Abu Dhabi have much more of a need for these bars, where patrons can cool off after a days sightseeing. Cape Towns ice bar is located in the fashionable V&A waterfront area and the only hint youll have of being in Africa is the giant carving of Nelson Mandela on the wall.
Cocktails and Cuba
Youll forget that youre in Cape Town and be convinced that youre lying on a beach in Havana when you visit Cape to Cuba in nearby Kalk Bay. This cocktail joint is known for its Caiprinhas and Mojitos and even the barmen are dressed in funky Cuban slacks and Che Guevara berets. You can suck on a traditional Cuban cigar in the outside Che Bar while souvenir sellers try to sell you traditional Cuban merchandise.
Cocktails in Camps Bay
If theres one place to see and be seen in Cape Town, then it has to be the fashionable Camps Bay area. The areas best bar is Baraza located on the promenade, where the house specialities include Jelly Bean and Sex on the Beach. The vibe is typically African with funky beats and traditional Swahili decor. Its also one of the best places for enjoying a quiet sundowner while watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
Cocktails and Kink
The House of Kink is a sensual cocktail bar located inside a stylish building in Park Road. If youre after burlesque with your bubbles, or simply like the mixture of cocktails and cabaret, then the House of Kink is what youre looking for. Upstairs consists of separate areas known as the boudoir bedrooms, while downstairs is the Kink Kitchen which serves cheekily named dishes such as dunk the skank (fondue) and Asian Persuasion (sushi). One of the best things about House of Kink is you never really know whats going to happen, the club hosts everything from tango parties to masked balls, so if youre looking for sexy surprises with your cocktails then head on down to Kink.
