The U.S. Commerce Department released new figures on Tuesday, showing an imbalance of US$61.04 billion as of February. The figure was up 4.3 percent from the US$58.5 billion deficit last January.

“While we imported the necessities, we didn’t sell a lot to the rest of the world,” Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors told Bloomberg. “As for the Fed, this report would likely mean more measured rate hikes,” he said.

“We are sucking in more products faster than we can sell abroad. It will reduce GDP growth a bit, but not a lot,” David Berson, the chief economist for Fannie Mae told Reuters.

The trade deficit has been aggravated by high oil prices and a surge of textile imports after the lifting of quotas on January 1. Oil prices have been close to record levels recently, but light sweet crude fell $1.85 to US$51.86 on Tuesday, after the International Energy Agency issued a prediction that interest rates and fuel costs would slow down demand for oil.

The new trade figures temporarily forced the dollar down against the yen and the euro. But later in the trading day, the dollar recovered lost ground as traders waited for a statement about the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting last March.

Dance Your Way To Schools

Dance Your Way to Schools

Back to school often also means back to, or entering a new dance school as well. When you have planned for your child to enroll him/her in a dance class, the choice of dance studio may be a bit taxing for you. Choosing a dance studio best for child can sometimes become really difficult, as you never know that the dance class or studio might turn out to be harmful for your child. There are few important things which you should be aware off before choosing a dance studio.

Location of a dance studio is important, as you might have to drop your child off frequently. Normally, people prefer a place which is nearby their house for easy access. So try to find out a dance studio or a dance school which is easily accessible for you. If a dance studio or a ballroom dance school is being run for quite some time, then it is a good idea to get feedback about that dance studio from other people, namely other parents, who have been to that particular dance school. This will give you an idea whether the studio is suitable to start with or not. However, remember that while a studio might be perfect for one person, it doesn\’t mean that it will be perfect for you. Does the studio provide different dance styles and classes? It will depend upon your choice to either go for a studio teaching a specific type of dance style, or should be the one teaching a variety of dances. There are difference types of Dance Schools; dance school for kids and dance school for adults. Most of the dance studios will offer a variety of dance styles including ballet, tap, and jazz. Another important thing is the type of dance education offers made by the studio. Does it offer both group and private classes? A good studio is one which offers regular dance practices. Choose according to different needs from dance schools for kids or dance schools for adults.

It is also very important that the dance instructors be professional in dancing. They must be well aware of the latest dance techniques and styles. You can ask them about their personal accomplishments in their individual dance field. You can also ask about the teaching method they use in their studio for teaching purposes. Does the instructor possess any degree in his field? Is he/she a registered instructor? The trainer/instructor must have the qualities like he should be caring, patient, disciplined, encouraging and must have knowledge of what he is going to teach.

Tim Curry, TV premiere screenings, cosplay feature at Fan Expo Canada

Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Toronto pop culture convention Fan Expo Canada has wrapped for another year. It ran from Thursday to Sunday. Major panels included Tim Curry and the cast of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Beauty and the Beast voices Robby Benson and Paige O’Hara, actors Kathleen Turner, Richard Dreyfuss, Anthony Daniels, Felicia Day, and child leads from Stranger Things. Canadian television channel Space hosted a Star Trek: Discovery panel with seven lead cast members. On the heels of sister event Toronto Comic Con’s Degrassi reunion event, the lineup included a twentieth anniversary panel with the stars of another Canadian high school television series, Student Bodies.

Heading into its fourth and final season, attendees got a chance to see the season opener of Star Wars: Rebels on Saturday, followed by a panel. The event has had a continuing relationship with the series, screening other episodes previously. The second season premiere of the sci-fi series Travelers was accompanied by a panel including Eric McCormack. Canadian true-crime drama Bad Blood had its world premiere. Other debuts included broadcaster City with the Canadian premiere of Ghosted, with Craig Robinson in attendance, Teletoon with the Canadian premiere of Hotel Transylvania: The Series, and YTV with the new animated series Mysticons.

Anime fans could watch episodes of their favourite shows, including AKB0048, Otaku No Video, Hana Yamata, My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, and Penguindrum.

The book Star Wars Made Easy, targeted to non-fans to get up to speed on the fictional universe’s various facts and figures, was ironically launched by DK Canada for a room of fans of the franchise. Author Christian Blauvelt answered questions from the audience on topics like his opinion on Midiclorians — he understands fan contention, but suggested that science and religion can co-exist, like in the real world — quizzed the audience on trivia, and signed copies of his book.

Some panels were quite ahead of the curve: one on Star Wars costume and prop building discussed building Porgs figures, despite the film The Last Jedi not being released to theatres yet.

York Regional Police were at the event with United and Unity, two brightly lit characters of their own creation. The force received funding in 2014 from the Provincial Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy to create a short film featuring the character United, receiving positive recognition locally. “Our United superhero program is part of our on-going efforts to connect with our community and show police in a different light,” YRP Constable Andy Pattenden told Wikinews. He explains that the officers who developed the project have a background in film-making, and “serve as an opportunity for us to start a conversation with youth and connect with them at a non-traditional level.”

Star Wars character Jabba the Hutt, a puppet in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, was re-created by the 501st Legion as an animatronic. The 501st is a fan group that dresses like the series villains for charitable events, particularly those raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The new addition to their annual display commanded long lineups throughout the day, from con-goers looking to donate in exchange for a photo-op with the massive, slug-like alien.

As with most major conventions, cosplayers were numerous, ranging from simple outfits that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow if worn from day-to-day, to elaborately-created costumes and giant props. Outfits recognized by Wikinews’ reporter ranged from classic characters like the 1960s version of Batgirl and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character created by Walt Disney in 1927, before Mickey, to 2010s characters from creative works like Undertale, Disney Descendants, League of Legends, and Adventure Time. Few characters are too obscure, if they appeal to a fan: the female avatar of “hivemind” character Unity, from a single episode of Rick and Morty, was spotted. One woman “biting” another woman’s arm would be cause for concern most places, but at a pop culture convention, it simply means that “Lilo” is re-enacting a scene with “Mertle”, as seen in the film Lilo and Stitch.

Wikinews talked with Cheryl, the co-host of the weekly video series “Our Didnee Side”, who was dressed as Gadget Hackwrench, a mouse from the 1990s television series Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Speaking for both of the hosts, she said their passion for Disney has “exploded” since starting the YouTube channel, and that they are both “creators. We can’t seem to go a day without making something. We love doing Disney cosplay because it is like a beacon for other people in the fandom to come find us in a sea of other characters.” Conventions like Fan Expo Canada become “a great opportunity to meet like-minded Disney fans, and to possibly escape for the weekend from our ‘boring human’ lives.”

Adrianna Prosser, host of Toronto geek culture community website Geektropolis, spent part of the convention Fan Expo Canada 2017 as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. She told Wikinews that “geeking in Toronto is always such a joy, what with amazing cosplay and passionate fandoms coming together at Fan Expo!” She explained that the site tries to keep the feeling of the event going all year, featuring local creators and “geeky” fans, in an effort to bring the community closer together.

Party game Cards Against Humanity — intriguingly available under a non-commercial Creative Commons license — offered a “Free Apologies from An American” booth, where a representative offered regrets to the largely Canadian visitors. The booth’s curtains came into use at least once on Friday, closing when a Trump cosplayer reached the front of the line.

Czech diplomats secure release of Polish ‘terrorist’ in Syria

The Czech government on Monday announced its diplomats had secured the release of a Polish citizen imprisoned for terrorism in Syria. The Polish foreign ministry on Tuesday confirmed the release of Leszek Panek, 54, from Wroc?aw.File:???????? – panoramio (4).jpg

Polish media reports Panek, who vanished in late 2015 after crossing into Syria via Lebanon, suffers ill mental health. He had previously been travelling around Poland to warn of impending nuclear Armageddon. A statement from the Czech Presidential office said Panek’s condition was “satisfactory”.

Panek requires crutches after he was shot during his arrest by the Syrian army in Homs. He faced the death penalty after being accused of “activities linked to terrorism”. The Czech statement said he was released for humanitarian reasons. When Polish authorities learned of Panek’s location last year they tried to negotiate his release before seeking Czech help.

The Czech embassy is the only representation of any European Union nation in Syria and as such it represents all other EU members as well as the United States in the nation. Hynek Kmoní?ek, head advisor on foreign policy for the Czech President, said Ambassador Eva Filipi in Syria and her counterpart in Lebanon secured the release with their “empathy and energy”. Filipi has been praised by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad who last year spoke of her commitment to Syria despite danger and political turmoil.

Kmoní?ek travelled to Beirut to witness Panek’s transfer to the Polish embassy in Lebanon. The Polish foreign ministry says he is expected home imminently, and that he went to Syria in order to convert people away from Islam to instead follow Christianity. A Czech Presidential spokesperson said negotiators worked in both Prague in the Czech Republic and Damascus in Syria, where the Czech embassy is located, for several months.

Most Pedestrian Accidents In Hawaii Occur When Drivers Are Making Turns

Author: Admin Posted under: Insurance

byAlma Abell

Whenever a driver makes a left or right turn in traffic, the chances of an accident happening increase. Pedestrians can be particularly at risk, since drivers may not see them in a crosswalk if they aren’t paying close attention. Some individuals advocate for the repeal of traffic laws allowing right turns at red lights, since pedestrian accidents in Hawaii and elsewhere are a hazard associated with these maneuvers.

Right Turn on Red

The main problem with turning right at a red light is that so many drivers do not come to a complete stop and look at the crosswalks from all directions. They slow down for the light, look toward the direction they want to go, and speed up. Pedestrian accidents in Hawaii are significant risks due to this behavior.

Left Turns

Left turns are a much bigger problem, accounting for about twenty-five percent of accidents in which vehicles strike pedestrians, according to a report from National Public Radio. Nearly two-hundred pedestrians are killed each year in these specific types of incidents.

Traffic signals with left turn arrows are less of a problem because the pedestrians do not have a “walk” signal while the arrow is green. Drivers also do not have to be as concerned with gauging the speed and distance of oncoming traffic, since those drivers coming from the other direction are supposed to be stopped at their red light.

Left turns at intersections with stop signs also pose significant problems. The intersection may have stop signs only for traffic coming from one direction. The other drivers are free to make a left turn if there is no oncoming traffic, but they must watch for pedestrians crossing the street.

Distracted Walking

Drivers who were making a left turn and struck a pedestrian are nearly always considered at fault by law enforcement. However, Honolulu has a law against distracted walking. Looking at a screen while crossing a street is a violation. The law was passed to address Honolulu’s relatively high rate of vehicle-pedestrian accidents. A person who was violating this law and was struck by a vehicle may need representation by an organization like Yoshida & Associates if the driver’s automotive insurance disputes the claim. US stock markets reach 12-year lows

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Bottled water concerns health experts

Canadian researchers from C-crest Laboratories have discovered an “unusually high” amount of bacteria in bottled water. Researchers don’t blame specific brands, but bottled water in general.

A random study found unusually high rates of heterotrophic bacteria in the bottled water, more than 500 cfu, the legal limit set by United States Pharmacopeia on how much bacteria should be present in drinking water in Canada. Unusually high amounts of bacteria were present in 70% of the test samples across several brands of bottled water. “Heterotrophic bacteria counts in some of the bottles were found to be in revolting figures of (100) times more than the permitted limit,” said Sonish Azam, a Canadian researcher involved in the study, “This amount of bacteria is alarming, as if we are ingesting a cup of culture.” “Microbiologically speaking,” she said, “tap water is purer than bottled water — most bottled water. We didn’t know this until we conducted the research.”

The bacteria are not very harmful to an average person, but many sensitive groups, such as the young, sick or elderly, could get sick from it. “Heterotrophic bacteria counts in drinking water are not a health concern to the general public,” was the concluding analyses of a recent study by the World Health Organization.

Kenya deports Somali businessman

Kenya deports Somali businessman
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Following its decision yesterday to bar Somali warlords and their associates from entering the country, Kenya today deported a Somali businessman, citing his links to leaders engaged in the ongoing civil conflict in Somalia.

Abdirashid Hussein Shire was arrested by police at a hotel in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and escorted to a flight out of the country, reportedly heading for Dubai. Shire is alleged to be a supporter of the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism, an alliance of Somali warlords who are currently engaged in a conflict with the Islamic Courts Union for control over Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

Yesterday, the Kenyan government barred Somali warlords or their associates from entering the country. The Kenyan foreign affairs assistant minister Moses Wetang’ula declared them “persona non-grata”.

“The government would like to reiterate its previously stated position that it will not permit its territory to be used by those who persist in destabilising Somalia and undermining our ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in that country,” said the Kenyan foreign ministry in a statement released Tuesday.

Kenya has been closely involved in efforts to normalise the situation in Somalia. Kenya hosted and mediated talks between the various Somali factions for more than two years, leading to the formation of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in 2004. The Somali Cabinet was named in August 2004 at the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi.

The Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is also the current chairman of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a seven-member regional development organization in Eastern Africa. The IGAD passed a resolution in March in support of the transitional government, expressing concern over the upsurge of violence in Somalia and calling for a cessation of hostilities. The resolution also called for the lifting of a UN arms embargo to “enable IGAD and the AU deploy the Peace Support Mission to Somalia”[1].

Many Somali leaders have homes or business interests in Kenya, whose capital Nairobi forms a regional business hub.
