Australian Prime Minister John Howard has told media in Canada that he wants “a full-blooded debate” in Australia about the issue of nuclear power. “I have a very open mind on the development of nuclear energy in my own country,” he said. “That includes an open mind on whether or not Australia should in fact process uranium for the purposes of providing fuel for nuclear power in the future in Australia.”

Australia and Canada are two of the world’s largest uranium producers, and the nuclear energy issue was discussed at length during Prime Minister Howard’s visit to the country this week. Mr Howard said soaring oil prices and environmental concerns from fossil-fuel energy are adding pressure towards the debate in Australia. “I think it is inevitable. The time at which it will come should be governed by economic considerations,” Mr Howard said from Ottawa.

Australian Greens leader Senator Bob Brown labelled the Prime Minister’s call “a sham”. Senator Brown says the Prime Minister has already made up his mind. “His talk about a public debate is a complete sham, he’s made up his mind,” he said. “He’s had no mandate, but he’s got control of the Senate and therefore we are going headlong into becoming a major agent in the nuclear proliferation right around the world.”

Scientists have said Australia could not develop a nuclear power industry in time to stave off the effects of climate change. Greenpeace Australia says that even if there was a doubling of nuclear energy by 2050 it would only reduce greenhouse gas emissions by five percent, well below the large cuts scientists say are necessary. Academics at NSW University and the University of Technology Sydney have said, “No private investor would take on the risk without huge government subsidies.”

The NSW Greens MLC Ian Cohen said that after 50 years, the nuclear industry still had not found a way to store its waste safely. “We don’t want it back and we don’t want to create it here.”

Steve Shallhorn, chief executive of Greenpeace Australia Pacific says the Prime Minister should have used his trip to Canada to learn why “nuclear power is not a viable option.” Mr Shallhorn said that, in Canada, nuclear power has driven up the price of electricity and created dangerous amounts of waste. He says its effect in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is also negligible.

“Nuclear power can only solve a very tiny portion of greenhouse gas problems because electricity is only one source of the problem,” said Mr Shallhorn. “Nuclear power is not going to solve emissions from aircraft, from the industrial sector or from industrial processes.”

“I think it is inevitable. The time at which it will come should be governed by economic considerations,” Mr Howard said from Ottawa.

Australia is one of the world’s top coal producers. The Howard government has supported the coal industry in the face of calls for more renewable energy. Treasurer Peter Costello, next-in-line for the prime minister’s job, has said “nuclear power would cost twice as much as coal power, adding that nuclear energy was not economically right for Australia at the present time because it had such large resources of gas and coal.”

John Howard said nuclear power in Australia “could be closer than some people would have thought a short while ago.” Federal Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, claimed it could be as early as 2020.

The Opposition’s environment spokesman, Anthony Albanese, said Labor opposed nuclear power on cost, safety, and waste and proliferation grounds. “Labor will not change that view.” He said he looks forward to “Labor ending John Howard’s nuclear fantasy.” Energy experts say that Australia could not develop a nuclear power industry in time to stave off the effects of climate change, and such a program would be prohibitively expensive.

A 2005 survey found 47 percent of Australians supported nuclear power and 40 percent opposed it. The federal opposition party, and all six state governments, oppose nuclear power. Australia has a strict “no new mines” uranium policy.

New Orleans, Louisiana —After Category 4 storm Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, on the night before August 29, 2005, several flood control constructions failed. Much of the city flooded through the openings. One of these was the flood wall forming one side of the 17th Street Canal, near Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the primary agency for engineering support during such emergencies. A USACE team was assessing the situation in New Orleans on the 29th, water flow was stopped September 2nd, and the breach was closed on September 5th.

Anna Ayala, the Las Vegas woman who claims to have found the notorious “chili finger” at a Wendy’s outlet in San Jose, California, has filed lawsuits against other businesses, according to researchers at the Associated Press. Her previous court battles included the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, and even General Motors.

Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against El Pollo Loco, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car.

Ayala’s original account of the incident spoke “emotionally and with disgust” to the San Jose Mercury News when she described it to the paper.

“Lies, lies, lies, that’s all I am hearing. They should look at Wendy’s. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?” Ayala recently told The Associated Press. Ayala is now in her Las Vegas home, avoiding reporters.

“It doesn’t prove anything,” family spokesman Ken Bono told the San Francisco Chronicle. “My mom has 10 lawsuits. A lot of people have lawsuits. Why would she sue for money? She has plenty of money,” he said.

Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

“We just want to step back and take a deep breath,” Muyo told Knight Ridder Newspapers. “From a law enforcement point of view, once you establish it is a human finger, you have to wonder is this a case of industrial accident or is this a case of unreported homicide,” he said.

Las Vegas police searched Anna Ayala’s home on Wednesday, retrieving a cooler and other effects from her home, such as a makeup case.

Despite the incident, which has dramatically reduced sales at Northern California Wendy’s outlets, die-hard Wendy’s fans are still turning up for lunch, even at the outlet where the finger was found, at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

“We’ve eaten here for years,” a police officer told the San Francisco Chronicle under the condition that he remain anonymous. “They’re very nice people. When we work Spartan Stadium, we always eat here,” he said.

San Jose City Council candidate Andrew Diaz still eats the chili. And he witnessed the finger discovery.

“I walked away real slow,” Diaz told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I didn’t want any commotion,” he said.

On Wednesday night more than 1,000 protesters, most of them part of the LGBT community, staged a dance protest they called the “Queer Rager” outside the Leows Hotel in Philadelphia’s Center City, where the U.S. Republican Party has arranged a retreat. Gay rights and health care featured amongst the issues raised.

Protesters expressed concerns about traditional gay issues, but Republican U.S. President Donald Trump’s impending repeal of the Affordable Care Act, law enforcement, climate change and other issues were also visible. Signs included “Health Care Is a Human Right,” “BROWN BLACK LGBTQ LIVES MATTER,” and “Trans Bodies Are Beautiful.”

Titled “Queer Rage(r): Guerrilla Dance Party,” participants were invited to dance and carry signs. Like the Women’s March last Saturday, this protest was organized partially through Facebook.

Event organizer Hanako Franz told ABC Channel 6, “The focus for tonight is to call attention to the ways in which queer and trans, especially queer and trans black and brown people, do not have access to a lot of healthcare.”

“Get ready to WERK it out,” reads the event’s official Facebook page. “As they try to take away our health care, to police Black, Brown, Trans and Queer bodies, to regulate our bodies, we’re here to say #WeAreQueer #WeAreHere #WeWillDance.”

This is part of several events, including a rally by health care professionals, expected to continue until today, when the retreat ends. One event, which has been given the go-ahead by the city of Philadelphia, is expected to draw 3,000 participants.
