Cyclone Clare batters Western Australia

Tuesday, January 10, 2006

The eye of Cyclone Clare, a category three storm hit the Western Australian coastline at 11PM AWST on Monday (3PM Monday UTC).

Cyclone Clare crossed the coast 100Km north of Karratha, battering the Pilbara region with winds up to 195 km/h.

Initially it was predicted that the storm would hit the coast at around 9PM local time, but the storm slowed from 18 to 12 km/h delaying its arrival for two hours.

A large storm surge had been predicted, but forecasters say it is unlikely to eventuate. The sea is predicted to swell by only two to three metres.

Reports from the area advise that electricity supply has failed, but there has been no major structural damage to buildings and no injuries. Crews are assessing damage in Karratha and Dampier following Clare. Work teams are in the process of restoring electricity and telephone services.

Earlier today residents of Karratha and Dampier were advised to stay indoors due to flying debris caused by strong winds and the possibility of power lines being down. This advisory has since been lifted. The Bureau of Meteorology has advised residents to “proceed with caution”.

As the storm moves inland it continues to lose strength, being downgraded to a category two storm earlier today (10:00AM AWST) when it neared the town of Pannawonica. Winds were up to 140 km/h. The storm has since been downgraded again, to a category one storm.

The main concern now is for flooding due to heavy rain.

Lynne Nanini from Main Roads’s Pilbara office said the rain that follows may be more troublesome than the cyclone itself.

“We’re mainly concerned about any rainfall that may eventuate out of Tropical Cyclone Clare and as in the past, a few cyclones that we’ve had, most of our damage is actually caused by flooding.” she said.

A single mother was driving her kids to school when a speeding car hit them at an intersection. The other driver was still yelling on his cell phone when he got out of the car. Unfortunately the mother and her children had to wait for the rescue squad to get them out of their car. During that scary hour, the children kept crying and the mother was terrified for them. The mother and children all had severe whiplash injuries. Her parents advised her to call a Car Accident Attorney in Joliet IL.

The attorney understood that she couldn’t get to his law office. Therefore, he went to her home. After reviewing the case, he told her that she was injured by a negligent driver. Therefore, the negligent driver’s insurance company would have to pay damages to pay for everyone’s medical bills. The settlement would also cover her lost income while she recovered. Because she still had anxiety from hearing her children screaming for help, she was also entitled to damages for emotional trauma. She told him she had no money to pay for a Car Accident Attorney in Joliet IL.

He reassured her that lawyers take these kinds of cases on a contingency basis. A car accident case attorney in Joliet, only gets paid a percentage of the settlement that he wins for his client. This allows the poorest person to file a claim with the richest insurance company. The law firm pays all of the costs of preparing the claim and negotiating with the insurance company. If the insurance company refuses to settle out of court, then the law firm pays for the costs preparing for trial.

While the insurance company readily agreed to pay the cost of medical treatment and lost income, it declined the claim for emotional trauma. The car accident lawyer brought in psychologists and child therapists to explain the impact of being trapped in a car for an hour. When faced with the possibility of a jury trial, the insurance company agreed to the compensation for emotional trauma.

Kipnis and Kahn LTDis one of the Joliet law firms that represent injured people. They are always willing to review an injured person’s case.

Preparations for inaugural Bathurst International Motor Festival begin

The Bathurst Regional Council has begun preparing the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit for the inaugural Bathurst International Motorsport Festival (BIMF) to be held between April 13 and 16, 2006. The Mount Panorama motor racing circuit is considered to be the home of motorsport in Australia.

Council’s staff have been busy cleaning the facilities, erecting signage, checking pedestrian bridges and inspecting the track surface for the past few days.

The BIMF will be the first event to be held at the 6.2 kilometre circuit over Easter since 2000. In 2000, Event Management Specialists held the first motorcycle racing event since 1990, but due to EMS going bankrupt a short time after their 2000 event was ran and the inability of the then Bathurst City Council to find another promoter, the Easter event was canned.

The BIMF is inspired by the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom. The Bathurst Regional Council and event promoter Global Entertainment Team promise that the event “will cater for all motoring enthusiasts, collectors and historians”.

According to the BIMF website, the on-track program consists of:

 • Manufacturers showcasing their vehicles and track times
 • Historic touring car races
 • Aussie racing car races
 • Australian GT sports car
 • Parade laps by car clubs
 • Parade laps and races by “Legends of Motorsport”
 • Stunt car and bike events
 • Rally cars
 • Displays of cars from all eras of Mount Panorama’s history
 • The chance for patrons to purchase a ride around the circuit in a race car.

Off the track, the organisers have promised manufacturer displays, merchandise stands, music, joyflights, Off-road demonstrations and joyrides, autograph sessions and interviews with influential people in the Australian motor industry.

The United States bridge that collapsed almost a year ago, spanning the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is close to being reconstructed. The final sections of the northbound lanes of the new Interstate 35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota were put in place on July 5. The final segment was raised with a barge-mounted crane from the Mississippi River below. A temporary bridge now connects the two segments.

The remaining seven-foot gap will be closed in several days with concrete which is poured in place. The segments for the southbound lanes will now be raised and connected. The segments were cast in a work area which was on the 35W roadbed and were then moved to Bohemian Flats, near the University of Minnesota West Bank campus. A crane places each segment on a barge for delivery upstream to the bridge site.

The bridge may be completed as early as September, well ahead of the scheduled opening date of December 24th.

Get Paid To Speak In Public

Get paid to speak in public

by

Alan McMahon

My friend Keith told a story about how he was first paid to speak in public.

He said that he joined Toastmasters and he hadn’t been in it very long when he was asked to speak, and be paid for it as well.

Keith loves rugby and was at his rugby club when one of the managers of the club said to him:

“Ah Keith, you speak in public don’t you”.

Keith said ” err yes I do speak in public”, so the manager said “we would like you to do a talk at the club, we will pay you for it. How long will it be then, about 45 minutes, you’re used to that sort of thing aren’t you?”

Keith said “err yeah, I am”, even though he had only just spoken at the most for seven minutes in a Toastmasters ice breaker speech, the first speech that you do at Toastmasters, and had never been paid to speak in public before.

So that’s how he got started, and that’s how he got into being paid for public speaking because a man came up to him and asked him to speak and he said “yes”.

He ended up speaking for 45 minutes and he had a bit of a question and answer session afterwards.

Since that time he has been paid to speak in public on many occasions and he estimates that his total earnings to date are between 100,000.00 and 150,000.00. What’s that? Say $150,000 to $200,000?

Speak in public and you get paid money!

Keith knew that he knew he wasn’t perfect, but as Jack Canfield would say, he just leaned into it, just lean into it and get going, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just do it.

Or as Anthony Robbins would say ‘Take massive action’ it’s the same thing, just do it.

Do you want to know a way of ‘just doing it’, to just get out there and speak in public, and be paid at the same time, but you feel nervous and unsure that you will remember what to say?

To improve your speaking is easy!

All you have to do is use a Memory Map, just do Memory Mapping.

It works through linking what you want to say to location. You therefore know what you what to say without having to know your talk word for word and it’s a massive boost to your confidence.

‘Just do it’ and get paid to speak in public whether this is in your job or as a professional public speaker.

Buffalo, New York —A woman in Buffalo, New York in the United States is in critical condition tonight at Sisters Of Charity Hospital after she accidentally set herself on fire.

The unnamed elderly woman was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette, and the oxygen coming from her mask facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

Despite her “severe” burns as described by firefighters on radio communications, she was still able to dial the emergency line in the U.S., 911.

In the U.S. only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials in 2002. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Jamaica: Violence kills at least 30

Jamaica: Violence kills at least 30

Authorities in Jamaica say that gunfights in the capital Kingston have left at least 30 people dead, as hundreds of troops and police search for an alleged drug kingpin wanted by the US. At least 25 people were injured as well.

The violence has been triggered by the Jamaican government’s efforts to extradite Christopher “Dudus” Coke, the alleged leader of the “Shower Posse” group. Armed security forces stormed the Tivoli Gardens slum of western Kingston on Monday in an effort to locate Coke, who has not been found. Last week, Coke’s supporters barricaded the area in an attempt to thwart his arrest.

The trouble has forced the closure of schools and businesses across the capital, and the government has appealed for blood donations for the wounded. A state of emergency is in effect for parts of Kingston.

The US has issued a travel alert to warn citizens against visiting the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding has promised “strong and decisive” action to restore order.

Dove ad viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube

Dove ad viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Saturday, November 4, 2006

An advertisement for Dove beauty products has been viewed by well over three million people, without ever being on television. A copywriter from Ogilvy Toronto, the advertising agency that created a spot named “evolution”, uploaded the advertisement to video sharing website YouTube.

While the official upload of the ad itself has been viewed 1,119,262 times, there are dozens of copies of the ad on YouTube, adding to a minimum of 3,059,546 views. The official copy of the video is the website’s 12th most viewed this month, 53rd of all time.

Unofficial uploads have each received high levels of viewership, with 449595, 445322, 207906, 201670, 195265, 116501, and 102634 plays.

The agency did not originally intend to upload the video to YouTube, only display it on the company’s homepage. Staff member Tim Piper uploaded it to his account on October 6, about a week before it first got media coverage on Good Morning America.

The ad begins with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on a Photoshop-like program. The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional “Easel Foundation Makeup” brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board. “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” ends the ad in text, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.”

The creative team for the ad included Tim Piper, Mike Kirkland, Janet Kestin, Nancy Vonk, directors T Piper (treatment and post production) and Yael Staav (live action) from Reginald Pike, Soho post production, Rogue editing, Vapor music, Gabor Jurina and Make-up: Diana Carreiro, and Reginald Pike.

The official French copy of the ad has only received 132 views, although it was only uploaded on November 2, 2006.
