Christine Comer resigned this month as the director of the science curriculum for the Texas Education Agency‘s (TEA) director after more than nine years. Comer said her resignation was due to pressure from officials who claimed she had given the appearance of criticizing the teaching of intelligent design.

According to documents obtained by the Austin American-Statesman, “Comer was put on 30 days paid administrative leave shortly after she forwarded an e-mail in late October announcing a presentation by Barbara Forrest, a critic of the intelligent design/creationist movement. Forrest served as an expert witness at the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. At Dover, intelligent design was ruled “a religious view, a mere re-labeling of creationism, and not a scientific theory.” There is widespread scientific support for evolution, while creationism has been described as pseudoscience by the scientific community.

Comer’s resignation comes shortly ahead of the TEA’s State Board of Education (SBOE) reviews of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which determine what should be taught in the classrooms and what textbooks are bought.

The advocacy group Texas Citizens for Science have released a statement saying, in part, “The real reason [Comer] was forced to resign is because the top TEA administrators and some SBOE members wanted her out of the picture before the state science standards—the science TEKS—were reviewed, revised, and rewritten next year. Plans are underway by some SBOE members and TEA administrators to diminish the requirement to teach about evolutionary biology in the Biology TEKS and to require instead that biology instructors ‘Teach the Controversy’ about the ‘weaknesses’ of evolution, that is, teach the Creationist-inspired and -created bogus controversy about evolution that doesn’t exist within legitimate science.”

Professor PZ Myers, biology professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris, wrote that Forrest is “exactly the kind of person boards of education ought to consult before going down the road of attempting to legislate religion into the public schools.”

In reaction to the news Forrest told National Center for Science Education, “In my talk, I simply told the truth — about the history of the ‘intelligent design’ movement, about the complete rejection of its claims by the scientific community, and about the Kitzmiller trial and my involvement in it. Maybe the TEA can’t afford to take a position on what constitutes good science education — maybe it must remain neutral on whether or not to lie to students about evolution — but if so, that’s just sad.”

Agency officials declined to comment, saying it was a personnel issue.

People with excess fat around the waist have increased risk of early death Image: FDA/Renée Gordon.

A new study has found that people storing extra fat around their waist have a strongly increased chance of early death, even if their overall weight is average. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine today, found that for each addition 5 cm on the waist, the chance of early death is increased by between 13% and 17%.

In the study, 360,000 people from across nine countries in Europe were surveyed.

One of the study’s authors, Professor Elio Riboli of Imperial College London, commented on the findings. “We were surprised to see the waist size having such a powerful effect on people’s health and premature death,” he stated.

Oddly shaped fruits and vegetables, such as this aubergine are no longer banned Image: Jason Ruck.

The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, has today lifted its ban on unusually shaped fruits and vegetables, in what the EU’s agriculture commissioner has called “a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot”.

The regulation has previously been criticized as an example of the EU’s bureaucracy by critics of the organisation.

The products affected by the deregulation are apricots, artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, avocadoes, beans, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, courgettes, cucumbers, cultivated mushrooms, garlic, hazelnuts in shell, headed cabbage, leeks, melons, onions, peas, plums, ribbed celery, spinach, walnuts in shell, water melons and witloof/chicory.

Recent anonymous press briefings by US State Department officials indicated that its arms control division may punish Blackwater Worldwide for improper paperwork.

The Directorate of Defense Trade Controls has the power to fine or agree voluntary penalties with exporters of certain weapons, who do not follow correct procedures. Blackwater Worldwide, a private military company, exported automatic weapons to Iraq that became the subject of a federal investigation first disclosed in 2007.Concern was expressed by the unnamed officials that paperwork errors may make the weapons untraceable, and that some reached Iraq’s black market.

The 5 Electric Cars With The Longest Range

Now however, a new generation of electric cars are offering ranges from a single charge that not so long ago would have been unthinkable. Our article outlines the 5 of them that deliver the longest distances!

Imagine a car which has zero emissions, government subsidies of 3,500 off the purchase price, and is tax-free. Oh, and it requires less maintenance, has lower running costs, AND creates nearly no noise.

This car is not a mere fantasy, it exists today in the form of an electric vehicle (EV). But despite all these benefits, electric cars only comprise 1-2% of UK annual car sales – so why aren’t more UK drivers buying EVs?

In a survey by YouGov, the most common concern for 81% of respondents was their range. But the ranges of EVs are improving all the time, meaning many options are available if you require a car which provides significant mileage.

Here, Yellow Car Shop have assessed the longest-range EVs, comparing their top speed, 0-60 mph acceleration time, range, and budget bracket.

 1. ‘The Splash Out’ – The 2021 Tesla Roadster

Top Speed: 250 mph

Range: 620 Miles

0-60 mph in: 1.9 Seconds

Price: 38,000 (Base Series) – 250,000 (Founders Series)

Pros:

 • A supercar for the real world: The Tesla Roadster has ‘Supercar’ status, but offers spacious, practical design
 • A luxury vehicle: The Roadster boasts a lightweight, removable glass roof, and showcases a sleek, modern, and minimalist ‘spaceship’ style design. The look is complemented by futuristic features such as fingerprint warlocks and DriverAssist
 • All-Wheel Drive
 • Seats 4

Cons:

 • Not released yet: The Roadster has been in development since 2017 and was due to come out in 2020, but this was delayed by COVID-19. Tesla may have to delay the release further to update the vehicle’s design, so it’s now speculated to be coming out in 2022. You can reserve your Roadster for a deposit of 29,000
 • The price tag: The Founders Series costs a staggering 250,000!
 • Design flaws: Some reviewers have expressed doubts about certain design components, including the ‘butterfly wheel’ which is not road legal in some areas
 1. ‘The Investment’ – The Tesla Model S Long Range

Top Speed: 162 mph

Range: 405 Miles

0-60 mph in: 2.3 Seconds

Price: From 73,990

Pros:

 • Cheaper than the Roadster: At 73,990 The Model S Long-Range is more affordable than its 250,000 counterpart
 • Similar features to the Roadster, but more practical: The Model S has more space than the Roadster; it can be transformed into a seven-seater AND includes extra storage space
 • Offers Semi-Autonomous Driving Assistance
 • Can seat 7

Cons:

 • BIG!The Model S is pretty chunky. Get used to inching around country lanes and squeezing into parking spaces!
 • Price: While it’s cheaper than the Roadster, buying a Model S is still not a decision to take lightly seeing as it costs 73,990
 1. ‘The Compromise’ – Volkswagen ID.3

Top Speed: 99 mph

Range: 340 Miles

0-60 mph in: 7.1 Seconds

Price: From 32,000

Pros:

 • Seats 5
 • Offers a quiet, smooth, and responsive drive
 • A practical vehicle which provides a decent amount of space and a reasonably large boot
 • At 340 Miles range, it offers a lot of distance for its price

Cons:

 • Too familiar perhaps? Little difference between the appearance of this vehicle and the Volkswagen Golf
 • Not flashy: Some reviewers have found the ID.3 ‘unmemorable’ on account of its practical design. But for a daily-use car, it’s a great compromise.
 1. ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ – The Polestar 2

Top Speed: 127 mph

Range: 292 Miles

0-60 mph in: 4.1 Seconds

Price: From 49,900

Pros:

 • A happy balance: The Polestar is fantastic value for money, and a great compromise between a practical car and a Supercar
 • Qualifies for the UK’s low emission car grant: You can get up to 3,000 off the purchase price when you buy a Polestar 2!
 • Has Four-Wheel Drive
 • Has Android User Interface: Connects easily to Google Maps
 • Has a decent amount of space in both the cabin and the boot
 • Seats 5
 • Includes a front boot for extra storage

Cons:

 • It can be difficult to find charging points for non-Tesla electric cars
 • Design hitches: The back windows don’t wind all the way down, and someone needs sit in the driver’s seat for the windows to work
 • Only connects to Android phones: Not so good for Apple users!
 1. ‘The Eco Warrior’ – The Hyundai Kona Electric

Top Speed: 126 mph

Range: 256 Miles

0-60 mph in: 6.4 Seconds

Price: From 17,396

Pros:

 • Seats 5
 • Has a decent-sized boot
 • Offers value for money: The Kona Electric has a range of up to 256 miles, and a top speed of 126 MPH. Not bad for a car starting at 17,396!
 • Fuel efficient: One of the most energy efficient electric cars around, with an 120 MPG-e rating
 • Handles well: Offers a responsive drive and does 0-60 in under 7 seconds

Cons:

 • Boxy design: The vehicle is square, with a functional interior

Al and Tipper Gore wedding photo

Former US Vice President Al Gore announced earlier today that he would separate from Tipper Gore, his wife of 40 years. The Gores called the decision “mutual.”

In an e-mail to close friends, Al and Tipper Gore said that they would not make additional comments. The message was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Gore family. A family friend said, “There isn’t anyone else. They just want to go their separate ways.”

In the e-mail, Al and Tipper Gore said:

“We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought we have decided to separate. This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together, following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.”

The announcement was met with surprise in Washington, D.C. Both were raised around the city, and met at a high school dance. 62-year-old Al Gore was the Vice President of the United States during the Clinton presidency and lost the 2000 US presidential election to George W. Bush. He also received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts concerning climate change. 61-year-old Tipper Gore is a professional photographer and co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center. On May 19, the couple observed their 40th wedding anniversary. The Gores have four children.

Gregory Kurtzer discusses plans for Rocky Linux with Wikinews as Red Hat announces moving focus away from CentOS

Gregory Kurtzer discusses plans for Rocky Linux with Wikinews as Red Hat announces moving focus away from CentOS

Gregory Kurtzer announced Rocky Linux to take the place of CentOS.Image: Gregory Kurtzer.

Last week, on December 8, US-based software company Red Hat announced plans to shift their focus away from CentOS in favour of CentOS stream.

Started in 2004, CentOS has been a free-of-cost free/libre open source software which provided binary-code compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) — Red Hat’s GNU General Public Licensed paid operating system. Gregory Kurtzer told Wikinews he started CAOS Linux around the time when Red Hat announced End of Life for their Red Hat Linux in favour of subscription-based Red Hat Enterprise Linux. CAOS was succeeded by CentOS when Rocky McGaugh, a developer of CAOS rebuilt the source code of RHEL to provide a monetarily free alternative. CentOS was absorbed into Red Hat in 2014, with Red Hat gaining the trademark rights of “CentOS”.

Red Hat also sponsors the development of the Fedora operating system. Until now, software development took place on Fedora, which was later adopted in RHEL, which the Red Hat maintained and provided support for, for those customers who had RHEL subscription. CentOS would then follow RHEL’s release cycle to provide the same features free of cost, but without the support.

Stream was announced in September 2019, just two months after Red Hat was acquired by IBM. CentOS Stream’s development cycle had new features added to it before the features became a part of RHEL. Stream receives more frequent updates, however, it does not follow RHEL’s release cycle.

With CentOS Stream, developments from the community and the Red Hat employees would take place beforehand on both Fedora, and Stream as a rolling release, before those features are absorbed into RHEL. CentOS followed the release cycle of RHEL and therefore it was a stable distribution. Features available in CentOS were tried and tested by Fedora, and then RHEL maintainers.

Red Hat’s Chief Technical Officer Chris Wright wrote in the announcement “CentOS Stream isn’t a replacement for CentOS Linux; rather, it’s a natural, inevitable next step intended to fulfill the project’s goal of furthering enterprise Linux innovation.” Since the announcement was made, many people expressed their anger on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Reddit and CentOS project’s mailing list. CentOS 8’s End of Life (EOL) has been moved up from May 2029 to December 31, 2021, while CentOS 7 is expected to receive maintenance updates through June 2024, outliving CentOS 8.

Soon after Red Hat’s announcement, Kurtzer announced his intentions to develop Rocky Linux, to fill the role CentOS had been playing for so long. Kurtzer said Rocky Linux was named after Rocky McGaugh. “Thinking back to early CentOS days… My cofounder was Rocky McGaugh. He is no longer with us, so as a H/T [hat tip] to him, who never got to see the success that CentOS came to be, I introduce to you…Rocky Linux”, Kurtzer wrote. Wikinews discussed with Kurtzer the beginning of CentOS, and future of Rocky Linux.

While no formal date of release has been announced for Rocky Linux, Kurtzer said they are planning to release the CentOS replacement before the end of life of CentOS 8. Kurtzer also said Rocky Linux will run on both x86-64 and ARM-based processors, and CentOS users would be able to convert their OS to Rocky Linux just by running a single command.

Saying Rocky Linux is for the community, Kurtzer said he “take[s] the responsibility of ensuring that all decisions are in favor of the community and the project and free from corporate control” including his own company. Talking about the attention from the userbase Rocky Linux has received, Kurtzer said, “I have never seen an open community come together this fast and be this passionate about working together towards a common goal.”

How Owning A Warehouse Can Benefit A Company

Author: Admin Posted under: Insurance

By Stewart Wrighter

Business owners face a lot of challenges, especially when it comes to companies that have to keep track of stock, inventory or massive amounts of files. It can be tough staying organized and focusing on your daily work and future goals if you are dealing with a mess all over the place. This is why having an offsite location that allows you to store these items is imperative when it comes to operating a successful business. One of the biggest complaints of companies is they never have enough space, especially for storage. Taking items you do not need every day and keeping them offsite will free up plenty of room for what you need to do. A Texas contract warehouse or California contract warehouse might be a saving grace for busy business owners. When your company has enough storage space, then you can finally focus on your goal which is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

All of this extra space makes it much easier to get organized. Sometimes the only way to organize something is to purge the excess. Though you might not be able to actually get rid of the clutter and stuff taking up a lot of your space, you can store it somewhere else so you do not have to worry about finding a place for it within your everyday workspace. Storing materials offsite is one of the easiest ways to finally get things organized and move forward with a much better place to work in.

Keeping merchandise and other materials offsite is safer. Should your workplace be struck by fire or burglary, the last thing you want is to lose all of your valuable files or inventory. If you are in the business of keeping information for other people, it could destroy your entire business if something happens to your data. Keeping sensitive materials offsite is a much better solution. Make sure the offsite building is protected and has strict fire protection. This will cost you less than securing your own building in this manner and it will keep everyday data separate from long-term storage.

As you enjoy having a more organized workspace, you are likely to see more productivity and success in your business. Not only will the extra space trigger this success, it will also give you room to grow now that you are experiencing more success. Opening up space in your workplace shows you are serious about increasing business and allowing your business to grow.

You will have to pay for the added storage area, but it is a wise business investment. In the long run, it is sure to pay off. If it does trigger growth in your business, that means more money will be coming in. These profits can be enjoyed all because you are investing in safe, effective storage space. Your employers will be happy they are not working in a litter and clutter-free environment and they will work harder to keep your business going strong. Having offsite storage can change the entire feel of your company.

About the Author: Stewart Wrighter recently stored the overstock from his store in a Texas contract warehouse. He searched the term California contract warehouse to find a place to store his seasonal merchandise.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Logo of the Marussia F1 team.

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

G7 says “all available tools” will be used to solve crisis
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

The financial leaders pose for a group photo.

In the midst of the intensifying global financial crisis, finance ministers and central bankers of the G7 nations – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom – met in Washington, D.C. and released a joint statement.

With failures of large financial institutions in the United States, the crisis rapidly evolved into a global crisis resulting in bank failures in Europe and the Americas, and sharp reductions in the value of stocks and commodities worldwide. The crisis further lead to a liquidity problem and the de-leveraging of world assets, which further accelerated the problem. The crisis has roots in the subprime mortgage crisis and is an acute phase of the financial crisis of 2007–2008.

After the meeting, a joint statement was released with a commitment to “stabilize financial markets and restore the flow of credit.” The statement outlined five steps to achieve these goals:

 1. Take decisive action and use all available tools to support systemically important financial institutions and prevent their failure.
 2. Take all necessary steps to unfreeze credit and money markets and ensure that banks and other financial institutions have broad access to liquidity and funding.
 3. Ensure that our banks and other major financial intermediaries, as needed, can raise capital from public as well as private sources, in sufficient amounts to re-establish confidence and permit them to continue lending to households and businesses.
 4. Ensure that our respective national deposit insurance and guarantee programs are robust and consistent so that our retail depositors will continue to have confidence in the safety of their deposits.
 5. Take action, where appropriate, to restart the secondary markets for mortgages and other securitized assets. Accurate valuation and transparent disclosure of assets and consistent implementation of high quality accounting standards are necessary.

“Central banks from around the world have acted together to provide additional liquidity for financial institutions, taking the necessary steps to support the global economy,” said US Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson in a statement after the meeting.

“We have taken a lot of actions,” said European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet. “My experience of markets is that it always takes a little time to capture the elements [of the decisions taken].”

The Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King said: “Central banks will work together as we demonstrated this week, to ensure sufficient short term liquidity is provided to stabilise banking systems. But it is also vital that governments work together to ensure their banking systems are recapitalised to enable them to lend to finance spending in the real economy.”
