Introduction: The Ideal Grilling Season

As the temperatures begin to rise in the Midwest, the call of the grill becomes irresistible. It’s that time of year when outdoor cooking finally takes center stage, and we embrace the aromas and flavors of flame-cooked dishes. If you’re in search of a hearty and budget-friendly main dish that won’t sabotage your dietary goals, allow me to introduce you to a true unsung hero in the realm of lean roasts: the sirloin tip roast.

The Allure of Sirloin Tip Roast

Not only is this cut highly economical, but it’s also remarkably lean, making it an excellent choice for those who are keeping a close eye on their nutrition. Sirloin tip roast is classified as a 0-point food on Weight Watchers, provided it is trimmed properly and cooked without added fats. This flexibility allows you to enjoy heartier side dishes or dessert without any guilt on your plate.

The Advantages of Choosing Sirloin Tip Roast

  • Budget-Friendly: When compared to more expensive cuts like prime rib or ribeye, the sirloin tip roast offers significant savings.
  • Lean Meat: Sourced from the round portion of the cow, this cut is naturally low in fat content.
  • Protein-Packed: Each serving delivers high-quality protein, contributing to satiety and muscle health.
  • Perfect for Meal Prep: A single roast typically feeds 6 to 8 individuals and provides excellent leftovers for sandwiches or beef bowls.

Preparing Sirloin Tip Roast on the Pit Barrel

In my own kitchen, I rely on my trusted Pit Barrel smoker; however, fret not if you don’t have one at your disposal. The techniques I share here can be replicated using either indirect heat on a charcoal grill or a gas grill.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Begin by generously seasoning your 3-pound sirloin tip roast on all sides with your preferred all-purpose beef rub. This cut can handle bold spices, so don’t hold back!

2. Once your chimney of charcoal is fully ignited, pour the coals into the Pit Barrel and place the seasoned roast inside.

3. Set a timer to flip the roast every 15 minutes to ensure even cooking throughout.

4. Keep an eye on the internal temperature; after about 1 hour and 15 minutes, it should reach around 120°F for a perfect rare to medium-rare centerpiece.

5. The final crucial step is to let the roast rest for 30 minutes, tented loosely with foil. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring each slice is succulent and tender.

Important Note: Grill temperatures can vary significantly, making a reliable meat thermometer essential. After the roast has cooked for one hour, check the temperature every five minutes to prevent overcooking, as I personally prefer my beef cooked to a medium-rare state.

What If You Don’t Have a Pit Barrel?

Should you find yourself without a Pit Barrel, fear not! Here’s how to achieve similar results using indirect heat on a traditional charcoal or gas grill.

Cooking on a Charcoal Grill:

  • Push the lit coals to one side of the grill and position the roast on the opposite side.
  • Place a small drip pan beneath the roast to catch any juices that may escape.
  • Cover the grill with its lid, keeping the vents open for optimal airflow. Be sure to flip the roast every 15 minutes.
  • Monitor the internal temperature using a meat thermometer for accurate doneness (approximately 120°F for rare and 130°F for medium-rare).

Cooking on a Gas Grill:

  • Only ignite one burner and place the roast on the cooler side of the grill.
  • Keep the lid closed while grilling and check the temperature every 15 minutes.
  • As with the charcoal method, flipping the roast periodically will ensure even cooking, and closely monitor internal temperature.
