Sunday, November 20, 2022Russian Wikinews captured exclusive media of a September 14 talk delivered by Russian traveller and author Viktor Pinchuk on his manual Hobo Tourism, published on English and Russian Wikibooks.

Pinchuk spoke at the 2022 Literary Festival hosted by the Crimean Republican Universal Scientific Library in Simferopol, which was named after I. Y. Franko. The hour-long lecture, delivered in English and Russian, addressed the advice and information given in the manual, including on overnight accommodation, self-sufficiency and Pinchuk’s experience travelling.

The lecture included a question and answer session and exclusive anecdotes, such as his deportation from Fiji.

‘Hobo tourism’ is similar to Western-style backpacking whereby one “[forgets] about comfort and [is] prepared for a few months of [the] difficult, sometimes exhausting life of a vagrant”. Pinchuk’s own experiences chronicled in the book include an overnight imprisonment by Afghan authorities and contracting dengue fever whilst in Malaysia.

Deadly fire below US President’s Trump Tower residence

Deadly fire below US President’s Trump Tower residence
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

On Saturday, the Trump Tower, in Midtown, New York City, caught fire shortly before 18:00 EST (2200 UTC) on the 50th floor, claiming the life of a 67-year-old resident, Todd Brassner, who lived in apartment 50C. All other residents were evacuated without incident. During the fire, six firefighters received non-life-threatening burns and other minor injuries. Neither US President Donald Trump nor the First Family were in the building at the time of the fire.

The high-end Fifth Avenue address is the personal residence of President Donald Trump, whose family occupies the top three stories of the 58-story building. The US Secret Service maintains a constant security presence inside the building with the New York City Police Department guarding a hard perimeter, intended to stop vehicular attacks, and a soft perimeter, intended for on-foot attacks.

The four-alarm fire required 200 firemen, extra police, and paramedics. At 20:00 EST (0000 UTC Sunday), the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) declared the fire was under control. Trump tweeted, “Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” This is the second fire at Trump Tower since the election; previously on January 8, a fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a cooling tower on the roof. Three FDNY firefighters received minor injuries, and all residents and office workers evacuated without incident on that occasion.

Trump Tower provides a number of unique problems never before encountered by the Secret Service. Never has a US President’s personal residence been inside a skyscraper or in a densely populated area like Midtown. The security measures have disrupted vehicular and pedestrian traffic requiring time consuming detours and delaying emergency response.

The New York Fire Code did not mandate sprinkler systems at the time Trump Tower was built in 1983, which might have reduced the size and severity of the fire had they been present. The 50th-floor apartment was, according to FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, “[T]he apartment was virtually, entirely on fire.” The Secret Service monitors all the fire alarms in the building but it took time to find the source of the thick black smoke emanating from the fire. Secret Service Agents escorted the firefighters throughout the building, including the Trump residence.

Brassner, the sole casualty, was unconscious when firefighters pulled him out of apartment 50C. He was transported to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. Originally listed as critical, he was pronounced dead sometime during the night. Brassner, guitar collector, was acquainted with artist Andy Warhol and was acknowledged in Warhol’s 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries. The cause of the fire is unknown, with investigations into Brassner’s death and the emergency response ongoing. Currently, the Secret Service leads the investigation.

Scientists use DNA analysis to track elephant poaching networks

Scientists use DNA analysis to track elephant poaching networks

Findings published Monday by a team composed mostly of University of Washington Center for Forensic Science researchers in Nature Human Behaviour report using a form of DNA analysis techniques originally designed for human teeth to track ivory poached from African elephants.

The scientists, in collaboration with the United States Department of Homeland Security, identified the criminal networks that killed the endangered animals and smuggled their valuable tusks across national borders.

The scientists took DNA samples from 4,320 tusks taken from both African bush (Loxodonta africana) and African forest (Loxodonta cyclotis) elephants that were confiscated from 49 separate ivory smuggling events in twelve countries from 2002 to 2019. The scientists found that teeth from the closely related elephants, or even two tusks from the same individual, often surfaced in different shipments that transited through the same ports. The data also showed when criminal networks shifted their operations from between port cities. They inferred poachers were making kills, then separating the tusks at some point along the smuggling route.

The team had been studying DNA analysis on poached tusks for years: in 2018, they found two tusks from different shipments had come from the same animal, which indicated both shipments were from the same kill and transited by the same criminal network. This is the first report of DNA identification tusks that came from elephants in the same families.

Lead author Dr Samuel Wasser said: “Identifying close relatives indicates that poachers are likely going back to the same populations repeatedly — year after year — and tusks are then acquired and smuggled out of Africa on container ships by the same criminal network.” He added: “This criminal strategy makes it much harder for authorities to track and seize these shipments because of the immense pressure they are under to move large volumes of containers quickly through ports.”

Wasser said similar studies will provide law enforcement groups access to a greater range of evidence with which to prosecute poachers and their criminal partners by providing verifiable links between different caches of captured ivory. The researchers concluded in their paper that law enforcement could use their information to discern the ways in which poachers are collaborating.

Humans have used the ivory from elephant tusks to make art, decorations, and tools since prehistory. Many countries have since outlawed the sale of ivory, but poachers continue to kill tens of thousands of elephants each year.

The paper’s authors were from the University of Washington, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Kenyan-based organisation SeeJ-Africa, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and Singapore’s National Parks Board.

What’s The Best Way To Prevent Wrinkles? It’s Simple, But Not Easy.

Author: Admin Posted under: Education

By Peter Clark

Preventing wrinkles. It’s quite a conundrum. So many people ask the question “what’s the best way to prevent wrinkles” and spend their life searching for the top wrinkle cream.

The first thing to say is that there is no one way to prevent wrinkles. Wrinkles are a natural part of aging and if you’re aging, as all of us do, you’ll get wrinkles. There’s no getting around that, it’s just a question of the age you get them, and how many wrinkles you’ll get.

Wrinkles form because of a number of factors, all associated with the aging process. Wrinkles and lines form on our faces, particularly certain parts of our faces like around the mouth and eyes, but also on other parts of our bodies. Wrinkling is just visible aging, and you won’t find anyone over, say, 80, that doesn’t have wrinkles somewhere.

So the first thing that you need to do if you’re looking for an answer to the question “what’s the best way to prevent wrinkles” is to accept that you will always suffer from wrinkles if you get old enough. To an extent you’ll need to learn to live with wrinkles.

Wrinkles form as a result of many interlinked factors. As we age our skin loses some of it’s collagen and elastin, and this causes our skin to lose the firmness and elasticity that it exhibited when we were younger. Aging skin is lower in collagen and elastin than young skin.

And as we age our skin is more and more under attack from free radicals that damage the cells that make up our skin structure, and cause poor skin health.

As well as this our skin suffers from damage from other factors, such as sunburn or even just normal exposure to UV from the sun, and from the effects of toxins and chemicals in our general environment. And if you smoke you’re just about guaranteed to have poor skin health as you age.

And believe it or not our skin can also be damaged from the use of mainstream skincare products. Yes many big brand skincare products actually contain ingredients that can damage our skin.

However that’s the bad news. Now for the good news. There are things you can do to lessen the onset of skin wrinkles and lines, and reduce their visible effects.

I’m not talking about Botox injections or plastic surgery here. These are only temporary solutions to wrinkles that work for a limited time then actually look worse than before the operation. Botox or cosmetic surgery is never a long term solution to wrinkles, and is also expensive, painful and often the result is worse than the problem.

So the solution to limiting the look of skin wrinkles is far simpler than that. Note I said simple, not easy.

The way to slow, or lessen, the onset of wrinkles is twofold. Firstly it’s about staying healthy. And I’m not just talking about skin health here, but staying healthy overall. Because skin health is a function of overall health, one cannot be divorced from the other.

Good diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet will help massively. Pizza and burgers won’t keep you, or your skin, healthy. Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals and anti oxidants, and help with skin health.

And regular exercise is very important as well, helping with skin health and wrinkle prevention in so many ways.

And don’t smoke. Smoking is the worst thing you can do for your skin.

And the second part of a simple formula that is the best way to prevent wrinkles is the use of a top shelf skin care and anti wrinkle routine, including a top wrinkle cream that contains only natural, safe ingredients. And regular use of other high quality skincare products.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not referring to those big brand name skin care products that you see advertised on TV and on the shelves of the department stores. Unfortunately those aren’t high quality skin care products. Most contain very little active ingredients, and many contain ingredients that can actually damage your skin.

I’m referring to natural skin care products that utilize all natural and safe organic ingredients that work extremely well. There are small niche companies that produce products like these, and they put their budgets into producing top shelf products rather than toward TV advertising. They cannot compete with the big brands and so occupy their niche in the market by product quality rather than Television saturation.

That’s the best way to prevent wrinkles. As I said, it’s simple, but not easy. There is no easy way to prevent wrinkles that works, wrinkles are a part of life, and whilst so many people search for the easy and complete solution to wrinkle prevention it is, sadly, unattainable.

But follow those simple steps and you’ll live a long healthy life, and keep most wrinkles at bay more than all those other women out there looking for an easy answer to preventing wrinkles.

Ransomware attack hits over 200 US companies, forces Swedish grocery chain to close
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Monday, July 5, 2021

On Friday, a ransomware attack which initially targeted software company Kaseya spread to over 200 companies in the US through Kaseya’s network management software. Huntress Labs, a cybersecurity company, alleged the attack was carried out by REvil, a Russia-based ransomware group. Kaseya told its customers to stop using its services when it learned of the attack.

According to NBC News, the ransomware first spread to about 40 of Kaseya’s customers, which are mainly companies that manage Internet services for their customers, some of which manage them for thousands of companies. John Hammond, a security researcher at Huntress Labs, said that “It’s reasonable to think this could potentially be impacting thousands of small businesses”. Kaseya notified its customers of the attack on Friday afternoon and warned them to stop using its services immediately.

Business Insider reported REvil is a Russian-based organization which provides ransomware-as-a-service. BleepingComputer reported receiving a sample of the ransomware used in REvil’s attacks and says that they demand USD five million for the ransomed files to be decrypted, though it is unknown if every victim received a demand for that same amount. Fabian Wosar, Chief Technical Offier (CTO) at the Emsisoft security firm, said affected customers had received demands for USD 44,999.

Swedish grocery chain Coop was also affected by the attack, and had to close all 800 of its stores because its checkout tills could not process payments due to the ransomware. Speaking to Swedish Television, Therese Knapp, a Coop spokesperson, said “We have been troubleshooting and restoring all night, but have communicated that we will need to keep the stores closed today”. Swedish company Visma Esscom, which manages servers for businesses, was using Kaseya software, according to Reuters. Railway services in Sweden were also disrupted.

On Saturday, US President Joe Biden directed intelligence agencies to investigate who was behind the attack. He said that “we’re not certain” who is behind the attack, adding “[t]he initial thinking was it was not the Russian government but we’re not sure yet”. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that it is “taking action to understand and address the recent supply-chain ransomware attack”.

Consider Downsizing When Building Your New Home

Author: Admin Posted under: Scaffolding

byAlma Abell

The home builders in Florida Keys FL are always watching for the latest home trends. It seems there is an interest in people opting to live a greener lifestyle. When building new homes, energy efficiency as well as using sustainable materials and products that are environmentally friendly such as low VOC products is becoming a must. However there are also many families trying to reduce their carbon footprint. This means there is more interest in smaller homes.

Ideas for Smaller Homes

In order to come up with comfortable designs for the smaller home there are many traditional spaces being removed from the layout. Additional spaces such as formal dining rooms might be replaced with eat-in kitchens or vice versa. Additional living space such as a rec room or family room is giving way to a single formal living room. The luxurious bathroom is becoming smaller with a focus on eco-friendly fixtures and low flow shower heads. The idea is to downsize wasted space and condense the home to provide the space required to be comfortable without the extravagance of too much space.

Better Value

One of the benefits of downsizing the house you design with home builders in Florida Keys FL is that it will allow you to build a home with better value. You will not only be enjoying the benefits of living a more eco-conscious life, but also lessen the financial burdens associated with building and maintaining a larger home. Your costs will be reduced both during the building process as well as your energy bills when you move in. Even your costs to furnish the home will be greatly reduced.

Cosier Family Living

In order to take advantage of every inch of space in a smaller home there has to be a more creative approach to the design. Consideration in the modern, downsized home offers interesting features that allow for multiple functions. Many families are looking at options such as “drop zones” where you can have a dedicated space for mail drop off, electrical outlets for recharging phones and a space to drop off school bags. Eat in kitchens are designed for entertaining to reduce the need for formal dining rooms. Smaller bathrooms still allow for luxuries without the need for massive showers or water wasting deep soaker tubs. Function becomes important to design to allow for everything to work for the eco-conscious family.

Island Marine Contractors & Thaler Construction, Inc. are the home builders Florida Keys FL families can trust for quality homes.

What Is The Recommended Daily Dose Of Turmeric For Optimal Health Benefits In Anti Aging Supplements?

Author: Admin Posted under: Bed Linen

By Valerie Rosenbaum

When it comes to turmeric health benefits and recommended daily amount of intakes, there are several uncertainties. Here you can learn about the possible benefits, side effects and uncertainties about a recommended dosage.

The turmeric spice is one of the plants that were used in Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional practice in India that is still present to this day. Scientific evaluation has shown that the ‘active’ components of the spices are the curcuminoids, most notably curcumin.

Curcuminoids are responsible for the yellowish orange color of the root. Researchers have learned that the compounds responsible for the various colors of plant foods act as antioxidants in the human body. Some of them have other activity, as well.

That brings us to the turmeric health benefits and recommended daily amount. Laboratory testing has concluded that curcumin has chelating, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-arthritic, anti-amyloid, anti-ischemic, anti-coagulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer activity. It all sounds good, but there’s a problem.

As a medicine, it was traditionally used to for stomach ailments, such as ulcers, heartburn, irritable and inflammatory bowel. It was also believed to ‘strengthen’ the liver, which has been supported by some modern studies. All of the other things that are currently being investigated require that curcumin gets to the bloodstream, but it is quickly degraded by stomach acid. Researchers have concluded that high doses, as much as 10 grams or 10,000 mg do not significantly increase the amount of curcumin in the bloodstream.

Researchers refer to this as low bio-availability and it is one of the reasons that the turmeric health benefits and recommended daily amount of intake are uncertain. You might think that a higher dose would be better, but high doses are accompanied by unwanted side effects, including nausea and stomach upset. There are other unwanted side effects that I’ll get to in a moment, but first, let’s look at the answer to bioavailability.

The actual answer is to take a moderate dose, 50-100mg, add an enteric coating to protect it from stomach acid and include other plant compounds that increase its bioavailability. An enteric coating reduces the risk of stomach upset, as well.

Taking any anti-coagulant is accompanied by risk, particularly if the dosage is too high. For example, daily aspirin intake is often recommended for people that have had heart attacks, because of the anti-coagulant effect, but the recommended dose for an adult is about what you would find in baby aspirin.

That’s one reason that there are questions about the turmeric health benefits and recommended daily amount. Anti-coagulants prevent the blood from clotting when there is an injury. Another risk has to do with the chelating activity. Chelating agents help the body rid itself of toxic heavy metals, but can also interfere with iron metabolism, which could cause anemia, in susceptible individuals.

There is no doubt that there are turmeric health benefits and recommended daily amount of intake that does not exceed 50-100mg is safe. Anything higher is risky. The best supplements contain this amount, along with a variety of other plant extracts, as well as basic vitamins and minerals.

available. As a result of that effort she has found that it is critical to include the correct

for an anti aging supplement to be effective. Learn more about what she discovered at her website
