Sparrow is a candidate in Ontario’s Don Valley West riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner. The riding was set to vote in a by-election on September 22, 2008, following the resignation of John Godfrey, but Stephen Harper’s sudden election call nulled that effort.

Also running in the Toronto riding are Liberal Rob Oliphant, Conservative John Carmichael, Green Georgina Wilcock, and Communist Catherine Holliday.

The following is an interview with Sparrow, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Tips In Getting Rich The Simple Way

Author: Admin Posted under: Health Care Education

By Nicholas Jarder

Getting rich is what everybody desires as they want to live a life where they can get everything they need and wish for. To become wealthy it needs patience, determination and hard work. Here are tips on how to become wealthy the simple way.

The first thing you should do is to define what the word ‘rich’ means to you. There are people who define rich as money for everything they need. Others would say being rich is having money for everything they want. There are those who say it is having everything they need when they retire and relocate. After you have defined the meaning of rich, you would then be able to devise ways to get your aim.

If you have not earned a degree, go to college. If you have a high school diploma, this is a gateway for you to earn at least $20,000 annually. If you earn a bachelor’s degree, you would get an additional $20,000 more per year. Once you start earning big amount of money, you would then be able to have something to save.

Do not spend more than what you earn. Many people are materialistic; they spend their money on things that are not necessary instead of saving money. Quench your thirst for the new electronic devices or that sports car. Learn to be disciplined with your money as this virtue would help you in getting rich easily. Save 10 to 15% of your monthly income as this can become seed money should a good business opportunity arrive in the future.

Start a business of your own so as to earn money. When you own your own company, even if it is small, you are your own boss and the money you make will depend on the time and effort you pour into it.

Start creating or acquiring assets so that you would be able to make passive income. You can write website content and be paid for it. You can rent out things you own such as an extra car you have, sound system, electronic equipments and the like. If you have a digital camera, take pictures of people for a fee. If you have a computer and an internet connection, you can serve as a virtual assistant of individuals and companies.

The stock market is a good place to earn money. Patiently invest in stocks and in the future these would double or triple what they are worth. Invest in companies that give huge amounts of dividends such as McDonalds or Walmart.

As much as possible, eliminate those unnecessary expenses. Stay away from those iced coffees as they are more expensive. When you add these small expenses, they can balloon. Invest the money you usually spend on these into a mutual fund and when retirement comes, you will realize you have made tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Stay away from quick-money schemes as these pose a high risk where you will lose so much money.

These are some of the tips in getting rich the simple way.

Witnesses saw truck “rev up and race” before recent Texas oil refinery blast

Witnesses say a truck was idling near the scene of an explosion at a Texas refinery which killed 15 and injured over 100 others on March 23, according to U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Manager Bill Hoyle.

“Witnesses saw vapor in the area of the truck and observed the engine begin to rev up and race,” Hoyle’s statement said. “This behavior by a diesel engine indicates the presence of a flammable atmosphere entering the air intake. A driver reported trying to shut off the engine but was unable to do so.” Hoyle’s statement continued, “There are multiple possible sources of ignition in an operating refinery unit and we have made no determination about the ignition source at this time.”

The investigation has been delayed by BP and Occupational Safety & Health Administration officials, who are trying to preserve evidence at the site for their investigation. They are also concerned about further injuries from hazards left over from the explosion, such as falling debris and unstable structures. The Environment Protection Agency also detected benzene in the atmosphere over the plant, which was treated with a layer of foam.

BP has retained control of the plant since the March 23 accident. Police arrived quickly the day of the explosion, but left after the initial emergency was over.

“Our officers could respond over there, but they don’t have a clue,” Texas City police Sgt. Curtis Pope told the Houston Chronicle. “The fact is they have chemical and equipment hazards. We don’t know the chemicals.”

US Federal Reserve ceases to publish M3 index

US Federal Reserve ceases to publish M3 index

Thursday, April 27, 2006

 • M0: Is total of all physical currency, plus accounts at the central bank which can be exchanged for physical currency.
 • M1: Is the M0 as well as the amount in demand accounts (“checking” or “current” accounts).
 • M2: Is the M1 as well as most savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificate of deposit accounts (CDs) of under $100,000.
 • M3: Is the M2 as well as all other CDs, deposits of eurodollars and repurchase agreements.

? from Wikipedia, The Free EncyclopediaMoney Supply

On March 23, 2006 the Federal Reserve ceased publication of the M3 monetary aggregate, in line with an announcement it made in November, 2005. The M3 is a measure of money supply in the United States,

The M3 is most general of the many measures of money supply, the quantity of money available within the economy for purchasing goods, services, and securities. The money supply is monitored and adjusted by a central bank, to keep inflation in check, because money supply has to change in tune with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to prevent inflation (or deflation).

In November last year, the US Federal Reserve announced that it would cease publishing M3 data, saying, “[the] M3 does not appear to convey any additional information about economic activity that is not already embodied in M2 and has not played a role in the monetary policy process for many years”, adding that the costs of collecting the data required for the index outweighed its benefits.

Some commentators have questioned this decision and have speculated that this would allow the Federal reserve to covertly fund the US budget deficit and its negative balance of trade or hide the fall in international demand for the US dollar. In March, 2006, Rep. Ron Paul introduced a bill (HR 4892) requiring the Federal Reserve to reverse its decision.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

The Onion: An interview with ‘America’s Finest News Source’

The Onion: An interview with ‘America’s Finest News Source’
Author: Admin Posted under: Uncategorized

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Despite the hopes of many University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) students, The Onion was not named after their student center. “People always ask questions about where the name The Onion came from,” said President Sean Mills in an interview with David Shankbone, “and when I recently asked Tim Keck, who was one of the founders, he told me the name—I’ve never heard this story about ‘see you at the un-yun’—he said it was literally that his Uncle said he should call it The Onion when he saw him and Chris Johnson eating an onion sandwich. They had literally just cut up the onion and put it on bread.” According to Editorial Manager Chet Clem, their food budget was so low when they started the paper that they were down to white bread and onions.

Long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, Heck and Johnson envisioned a publication that would parody the news—and news reporting—when they were students at UW in 1988. Since its inception, The Onion has become a veritable news parody empire, with a print edition, a website that drew 5,000,000 unique visitors in the month of October, personal ads, a 24 hour news network, podcasts, and a recently launched world atlas called Our Dumb World. Al Gore and General Tommy Franks casually rattle off their favorite headlines (Gore’s was when The Onion reported he and Tipper were having the best sex of their lives after his 2000 Electoral College defeat). Many of their writers have gone on to wield great influence on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert‘s news parody shows.

And we are sorry to break the news to all you amateur headline writers: your submissions do not even get read.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Chet Clem and Sean Mills about the news empire that has become The Onion.
